Hey there!

I was working at Thatch last night so I missed the LOST premier. Luckily my wonderful Wife has it on the DVR.

I'd like to point out that the recipe is just a wiggle away from Donn the Beachcomber's so I shouldn't get *too* much credit for it. It's my personal opinion that Donn used something like a herbsaint or absinthe rather than Pernod anyway.

Welcome Back!! I forget your mixmaster code name, so I'll refrain from screaming your name from the rooftops. I was thinking I like my alter ego McObsessed have also been slacking on blog duties. Clearly I take on too much...but when it's booze, I say it's okay.

I used to have the kiddie version of this with my grandfather, but I have to say adding the rye whiskey makes a big difference. Delicious!

WAAAY back when I got married, the liquor store delivered the wrong order for our reception to the parish hall next to the church! I was stressed out enough as it was, and this happens.
I wasn't worried that they couldn't correct the problem before the reception, though. I just needed a drink right then! Thus it came to pass, sitting almost alone in the day chapel, in the priest's chair, while waiting to get hitched, that I drank the one and only 7 and 7 I ever have, or ever will, consume.
Got no problem with the Canadian Whiskey, but I can't abide 7-Up!

Well, first the cocktaildb recipe isn't a particularly good interpretation of the Dempsey.

The cocktail, as originally written was: 2 dashes Absinthe, 2 dashes Grenadine, 1/4 Gill Gin, 1/4 Gill Calvados.

A gill is a little over 4 ounces, so that is an ounce of Gin and an ounce of Calvados.

1/2 to 2/3 of a teaspoon is enough for 2 dashes. A quarter ounce is a ridiculously large amount.

The recipe came from a bar in Normandy, France, so I think Calvados is really called for here. The Laird's Applejack is a pretty poor substitute for Calvados. If you can find the Laird's Bonded Apple Brandy, that's a bit closer.

In any case, The Dempsey was created to commemorate Jack Dempsey's knockout win over Carpentier in 1921. It's not an elegant cocktail to be savored. More of a short, sharp, jab to the jaw.

Well done on the head to head competition. I love any kind of themed evening. Kudos to you on involving pop culture in your blog. Also, yeah, anise, pastis, licorice flavored stuff is not my favorite, so the decks were clearly stacked in this case.

Yeah, I am still fondly recalling the scorpion. If I also recall, I did not use the straw, as you said "oh there's a 151 floater on there". I stopped sipping and choked "There Sure Is!" and kept drinking.
